Mornings

The Plan: Get up when Rob does (4:50- he is going to the airport). Do some bible study. Savor a cup of coffee. Make a grocery list. Enjoy quiet morning hours.

The Reality:
Bedtime- 4:25am- worst nights sleep ever, including a bathroom break every 1.5 hours, two times of trying to sleep sitting up because of heartburn, several minutes searching for tums in the dark, and 50 rounds of "throw covers off, it's hot. Dig for covers- its cold now."

4:25- Drew cries out. Probably just a moment of wakefulness. He will go back to sleep.

4:25:30- Sophie, asleep in the living room, gets up, shakes, and commences trying to break into our room by banging her head on the door, willing it to open (it's latched- no luck)

4:27- Sophie gives up and decides to go hang with Drew. Drew, who was going back to sleep, now hears his best friend and is awake. Wide awake.

4:28-4:40- Drew is awake and talking/crying. Apparently not going back to sleep.

4:41- I get up to gather dog to try to get the crying to stop. Find her standing sheepishly in the hall outside our door. Usher her in while mumbling about making her sleep outside.

4:42- I go upstairs and try to rock D back to sleep. It's working!

4:44- lay him in his bed.

4:44:02- he's up, crying, and wants to be held. Commence rocking.

4:48- lay him down again.

4:48:02- he's up. Tell him he must go back to sleep and leave him crying. I go back to bed.

4:49- Rob rolls over and declares himself not ready for a second child. Too bad, buddy.

4:50- Rob's alarm goes off, but everyone in this house is awake anyway.

4:51- I decide best plan of action is to bring D to my bed. I am too tired/huge to stand next I his crib and rock him for hours.

4:53-5:10- he lays quietly with me. Occasionally touching my face or reaching for my hand. All is forgiven- this is sweet and rare. Ellie begins an assault because her brothers feet are all up in her space. D seems confused.

5:11- Drew sits up and practices every vocabulary word he knows.

5:12- done laying down, Drew starts exploring the bed. I decide to let him. I don't care if he falls asleep with his rad at the bottom if he just GOES TO SLEEP.

5:23- it becomes apparent to me that D is not going to sleep in this bed. Return him to his own. He cries. Hand him a book (that he can't actually see) as a peace offering.

5:24- listen to him cry as I type this post.

5:49- post is done. House is quiet- he is asleep. Now I have to decide: back to sleep or start my morning?!

Magical Mommy Moment

Drew has been working on turning on the CD player in his room for several weeks now. He quickly found the pause button and the volume (note: full power or go home), but until recently he still needed assistance turning it on. About a week ago he figured it out.

Last night he was in his room while I was running his bath, so he turned on his music and started dancing to the radio. The song was one I knew- it was from my middle or high school years. I couldn't remember the name of the song, but the words were tumbling out of my mouth. I scooped him up and we danced through the chorus .

The song? Mariah Carey's "Always Be My Baby." I realize her song wasn't about a toddler, but for a mom who is stressing about sharing her heart in 3-6 weeks, it was just perfect.

You, my child-- who likes to sit sit at the table with no booster seat, walk (instead of crawl) up and down steps, and prefers his chips dipped in salsa, no matter how hot-- will always be my baby.

Overwhelmed

Today I am overwhelmed with gratefulness for the most amazing husband a girl could ask for, the sweetest little boy, a little black dog who will cry at the door at night to get in to sleep next to me, and our soon-to-be-born baby girl, who kicks me every 5 minutes so I can't forget about her. :)

"Lucky" doesn't seem to be strong enough to describe it....

Mama down.

I. Am. Sick.

I haven't been this sick in years, probably. Luckily Drew and I are still at my parents while Rob oversees the remodel in Austin, so I have extra hands to help.

I am about to head to the doc to rule out the flu (I did get a flu shot), because that can be really bad for pregnant people. I just hope whatever this is can be fixed by meds-- I don't have the energy to let it run it's course!

Concrete Jungle

Hello from NYC! I am currently sitting in a coffee shop in Times Square enjoying a latte and a chocolate croissant after a stroll through Central Park and down 5th Ave. It's been a pretty fab Valentine's day! Tonight we are getting Italian food (Carmine's) and seeing Book of Mormon, so I know the day will only keep getting better. Then we head home tomorrow. I am sad to leave (so much we haven't seen!), but I miss that stinker of a son-- who may or may not be getting a special something from FAO Schwartz.

My only question so far- who told the late teen/early 20s population that it was ok to wear tights, or worse HOSE, as pants? No, not leggings- sheer hosiery. Honey, I think that is the reason you are (a) freezing and (b) being stared at. Obviously this is a trend, because I have seen it multiple times. Bizarre.

Full recap later!

Why we have to go and make things so complicated?

I have come to the conclusion that Rob "nests" too- just in a totally different way than I do. I clean, clean out, and organize. He remodels. Or, more accurately, hires someone to remodel.

With Ellie on the way, we realized there will never be a good time to remodel our kids/guest bath, so a week ago we hired a contractor, Monday we picked out fixtures, Tuesday we picked out granite, and we are starting a week from today. Luckily it should be about a 3 day job, so I shouldn't come home from the hospital to a partially remodeled house like I did with Drew. (you know an appliance helpful to a new mom? A microwave. We didn't have one.)

Here is a before picture. Goodbye original knobs from 1972.

Next up will be building a patio to replace the one we ripped out several months ago. Obviously that project took a back seat once we discovered something that would work for the meantime when we ripped out the deck.

Not to be outdone by Rob's building efforts, I have hired a decorator for some help on my living room.

I wonder how much the Callegaris can accomplish in the next 10 weeks.... Hopefully quite a bit!

Big shoes to fill

Someone has entered the "if there are shoes around, I will put them on my feet" phase.

Personally I think my black flats look better than Rob's boat shoes.
